Stay motivated in the grey of June

The month of June was supposed to bring us cool drinks and airy clothes – but instead it brings with it dull, grey skies.

In fact, this weather can really get you down and even affect your mental health.

Just think: difficulty concentrating, feelings of sadness and irritability, and lack of motivation.

If the dreary summer weather is getting you down, we at MANIA have put together a few tips for you to help you get through these grey days.

1. Take every opportunity for some sunlight

Even if it's cloudy outside, try to get outside for about 30 minutes as soon as you wake up and expose your eyes to direct sunlight that isn't filtered through sunglasses or a car window. Morning sunlight is super important because it promotes the production of serotonin in the brain, which is known as the happy hormone and can increase your sense of well-being. This is especially important when fighting seasonal mood swings such as seasonal affective disorder (SAD).

2. Create a cozy interior atmosphere

Since you're probably spending more time indoors right now, make your space as inviting and cozy as possible. Use warm lighting, comfortable blankets, and maybe a few scented candles to create a relaxing and cozy atmosphere.

3. Plan your vacation

This is one of my favorite things to do on dreary days because the anticipation of a vacation can definitely bring more happiness than the vacation itself. This excitement before you fly off on vacation creates a positive mood and gives you something to look forward to.

4. Increase your social activities

Did you know that social interactions can significantly improve your mood? Plan activities with friends or family, even if it's just a casual coffee date or a cozy movie night at home. Interacting with others helps distract from the gloomy weather and offers emotional support. If in-person meetings aren't possible, meeting via FaceTime can be just as effective.

5. Movement is crucial

I feel for you...This may be one of the last things you want to do, but it's totally worth it.

Physical activity is a proven mood booster and releases endorphins that can help reduce feelings of sadness or lethargy. Whether it's just a brisk walk, a yoga session or a visit to the gym, staying active is a great way to combat the gloom.

6. Practice mindfulness and meditation

Mindfulness and meditation can help you feel grounded and relieve stress.

Meditating or practicing mindfulness for a few minutes a day can even improve your mental clarity and emotional resilience. Even just walking in green spaces can help ground you, as contact with nature can create a sense of connection and calm. This in turn can help reduce stress and increase your overall wellbeing.
